Ways you and your church can get involved
in the struggle for GLBT equal rights
Churches, synagogues, and mosques are unique among nonprofit organizations in their close and regular connection to their membership base. When linked together by a common cause, and integrated communications, they can become a formidable network of passionate, reliable activists. Back in the 1980s, the religious right recognized this and began organizing. Several decades later, right-wing churches are one of the most powerful forces influencing federal and state government. ICON was created as an answer to the religious right. There is no reason why affirming people of faith cannot become just as well organized and just as effective.
ICON, as a faith-based organization, is in a unique position to influence the debate over GLBT civil rights. Last year a group of generous donors pledged enough funds to support the work of an ICON Executive Director for a period of two years. Within that time, these donors believe ICON can be built into one of Indiana's most influential action networks and become self-sustaining through its annual membership dues. ICON will need a minimum combination of 2,000 clergy, laity, and religious organization memberships to ensure that Indiana will always have at least one full-time person traveling Indiana to keep affirming people of faith organized and effective. Beside annual membership fees, many supporters make additional donations to ICON. Unlike many of the organizations working to promote misinformation, stereotypes and prejudices against GLBT citizens, ICON operates on a bare-bones budget. Additional contributions help ICON to cover special project costs, unexpected expenses, and financial obligations to partner coalitions.

If you are a religious professional, we invite you to join the growing list of your colleagues taking a courageous, prophetic stand for justice by becoming a signatory on our letter to State Senators and Representatives. The letter calls for prompt enactment of legislation that would prohibit discrimination against GLBT people on the job and in housing and public accommodations. Prior clergy letters on similar civil rights issues have made a meaningful difference in legislation at the Statehouse. This letter has proved invaluable in the passage of city and county Human Rights Ordinances that include sexual orientation and gender identity. As the letter states, "justice requires that the basic civil rights of all people, even those with whom we may disagree, must be protected." This is a position that ICON believes all people of faith can embrace. Your signature will help create a more just society.

Host a House Party
ICON receives the majority of its funds from individual donors, so we need your continued support to tell people about who we are, what we're doing to promote GLBT equality in Indiana, and sign them up as members. House Parties are easy to organize and don't require a long lead time. These events are great opportunities to have fun and meet other supporters of ICON in your area. They also provide a cordial atmosphere that allows someone not familiar with ICON to learn a lot about our organization, ask questions, express their opinions, donate money, and get some personal attention within a safe setting. ICON provides you with a comprehensive guide and kit that supplies all the tools and resources you need to make your House Party a success.
